Preventing lung damage in young children

Early diagnosis of Cystic Fibrosis is important in ensuring treatment starts as soon as possible. Thanks to the concerted efforts of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, newborn screening was rolled out across the whole of the UK in 2007.

We are currently funding research at University College London to look at the treatment and impact of treatment received by babies who are diagnosed with CF. The research team will investigate lung function, structure and inflammation in babies diagnosed with CF by newborn screening to look at whether there are any signs of infection or inflammation by the time they are one year old.
