PTC 124 - Cystic Fibrosis Trust response 23.04.07
Whilst the Cystic Fibrosis Trust welcomes this development it is important to note it will not help the vast majority of people with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) in the UK. It offers real hope of significant improvement to a small percentage of people with CF in the UK and others in the world who have a particular mutation, sometimes called a 'stop' mutation or a nonsense mutation. However over 90% of those with CF in the UK do not have this mutation. Most, over 75%, have the mutation known as Delta F508, which would not be responsive to this drug.
The Cystic Fibrosis Trust has committed over £30 million into a gene therapy research programme which is designed to address the genetic fault which causes CF, irrespective of which mutation it is. Clinical trials for the gene therapy product, which has been developed by the Gene Therapy Consortium, will start later this year. The Gene Therapy Consortium comprises over 70 scientists, based in Edinburgh, Oxford and London, working as a team.
