Great Strides - Oh Water Hike!

Water Hike 20, 10 or 5 mile walk
Saturday 28 June 2008

Where?
Fewston Swinsty Reservoir
When? Saturday 28 June 2008 - 20 mile 9am start, 10 mile 10am start and 5 mile 11am start
How long is the walk? 5 mile "Family day out" will be a clockwise circuit of Fewston and Swinsty reservoirs, with an opportunity to revisit the car park for lunch at the halfway stage. This route is suitable for "off road" style buggies (it is not suitable for small wheeled buggies).
10 mile "Washburn Wanderer" will follow the west bank of Fewston reservoir to Blubber houses, along the river Washburn to include a clockwise circuit of Thruscross reservoir before returning via the river, the east bank of Fewston and the embankment. This route traverses exposed moors and includes uneven paths and tracks, a waterproof jacket and strong waterproof boots are essential, a warm drink and picnic are advisable.
20 mile all around Fewston Swinsty Reservior.
Registration from 8.00am, the 20 mile walk departs 9.00am, the 10 mile walk departs 10.00am and the 5 mile ramble departs 11.00am
Is there anything else I need to know? Children aged 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
What about the routes? All three walks will be led by experienced leaders at the start times indicated and road walking will be kept to an absolute minimum. This land is primarily used for the collection of drinking water, please stay on the paths and follow the suggested routes.
Can I bring a buggie / pushchair? The walks are all designed to be off road along footpaths and tracks. Only the 5 mile option is suitable for "off road" style buggies / pushchairs. (There is one short flight of steep steps down which the buggie will need to be carried.) None of the walks are suitable for small wheel "Maclaren" style buggies.
What else should I bring? A BIG SMILE, a small rucksack with a packed lunch, nibbles and a drink, a small first aid kit for blisters etc and cash for extra drinks etc. A mobile phone would help with our arrangements for your safety.
Accommodation There is lots of accommodation in the Harrogate area should you wish to make a weekend of it - be sure to book early as this is a very popular destination.
Refreshments These are not readily available in the area of the walks, be sure to bring plenty of fluids.
If you are able to advertise the walk by placing posters in your community e.g. work and school notice boards, local shops, clubs and pubs etc. or passing on leaflets to family, friends and colleagues, I would be really grateful.
