How to leave a legacy

Leaving a legacy to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust is a straightforward and easy way to support the work of the CF Trust and will cost you nothing during your lifetime. Simply tell your solicitor you want to include the Cystic Fibrosis Trust in your will and what you want to leave. Along with our name and address, you will need to tell your solicitor our charity registration number. The information you need is:

Cystic Fibrosis Trust
11 London Road
Bromley
Kent BR1 1BY

Registered charity number: 1079049 (England and Wales) and SC40196 (Scotland)

When writing or updating your will we strongly recommend you seek professional advice from a solicitor, who will take you through the process and make it as easy as possible. A simple will costs between £100 and £200.

Don't have a will?
If you don't have a will, you need to find a solicitor in your area. In England and Wales contact the Law Society on 020 7242 1222 or visit their website www.solicitors-online.com. In Scotland contact the Law Society of Scotland on 0131 226 7411 or visit their website www.lawscot.org.uk. Alternatively, contact Sue Whitehead for a Law Society list of solicitors in your area.

Your wishes
Before visiting your solicitor, make a list of what you have to leave behind and the approximate value. The next step is to decide whom you want to benefit from your possessions. It's natural to think of your family and friends first, and we hope that you will then consider the Cystic Fibrosis Trust with what is left over.

Wills aren't solely about passing on your possessions. You may want to nominate guardians for dependants under the age of 18. You can also include specific funeral arrangements and whether you would prefer donations to charity instead of flowers. Our simple will planning guide will take you through the steps.

Types of gifts
There are three main types of gift you can leave to a charity; these are residuary or cash gift or specific item of value. Download our guide to types of legacy for more information. Your solicitor will advise you on the different options available, depending on your circumstances.

Already have a will?
Minor alterations to a will are easy to make. If you are simply adding a donation to the CF Trust, you can go and see your solicitor, who may recommend adding a codicil to your will. This is so you can alter your will without needing to make a completely new one. However, a codicil still needs to be witnessed in the same way as a will.
