Walk over Water
Location: Severn Bridge, Wales & England
Date: Sunday 23 May 2010
Where? This walk will have two starting points, one on the Welsh side of the Severn Bridge and the other on the English side. For walkers from the English side of the water the registration point will be the Bristol Severn View Travelodge Car Park, located at Severn View Services, Junction 1 M48, Aust, Bristol BS35 4BH. For walkers starting from the Welsh side, registration will be in the car park at the Homebase store, Thornwell, just off junction 2 of the M48 motorway.
Registration will open at 10am and the walk will start at 11am, you will need to register your car number with us before starting out on your walk.
How long is the walk? The walk is approximately 8K in length and should take between 2 - 3 hours. If completing the entire distance is not for you - how about walking halfway to meet walkers from the other side and doing the return together? Unfortunately the walk is not suitable for wheelchairs from the English side as there is a long flight of steps. The bridge walkway is flat and level and is regularly maintained by the highways authority, but there is a slight gradient up to the middle point of the bridge where you will have the best views.
What will I need to take? Please make sure that you wear warm clothing and comfortable footwear. Layers of clothing will be the best as it can be cold in exposed parts of the bridge. As the mid point of the bridge can be very windy, it would be advisable to wear hooded jackets instead of wearing hats.
Is there anything else I need to know? Toilets are available in the Homebase store, there is also a petrol station, Little Chef, Burger King and a cash point at the Moto Service area for your convenience, but light refreshments will be provided at the registration points on your return. There will be a raffle on the day.
The walk will be on the dedicated walkway over the Severn Bridge and is the only place in the country where it is possible to walk beside a motorway. Since the second Severn Crossing opened the traffic is very much reduced and will not detract from your enjoyment of the day. Walkers will have glorious views of both countries, the new second Severn crossing and the beautiful Severn Estuary en-route so be sure to bring cameras to capture this awe-inspiring landscape.
Extra Great Strides T-shirts will be available for sale at registration.
If the weather forecast is unfavourable please ensure that you contact either Carolyn or Audrey on the numbers below in case the walk has to be postponed. Please note: if it is very windy we will not be allowing very young children to take part in the walk.
Apply Online: Entry is £6 per adult and £2.50 per child; you'll receive a free Great Strides t-shirt too. Simply apply online using the button below.
Every effort will be made to ensure that the walk is safe and enjoyable; however, anyone taking part in this walk does so at their own risk.
If you are able to advertise the walk by placing posters in your community e.g. work and school notice boards, local shops, clubs and pubs etc, or passing on Great Strides leaflets to family, friends and colleagues, I would be very grateful. To help, or if you have any questions, please contact me on the details below.
