Athens Classic Marathon

Location: Overseas
Date: November 2012

The Acropolis Athens

The most historic of all marathons, the Athens Classic Marathon celebrated its 2,500th anniversary of the Battle of Marathon in 2010.

2,501 years ago a certain Phidippides is reputed to have run from the battle of Marathon to Athens to declare victory over the Persians. In 1898 the historic route was run again as the first marathon of the modern Olympic era. In 2004 the Olympic marathon returned to the classic route and British fans will always remember the collapse of Paula Radcliffe in the fierce heat of the summer.

The Athens Classic Marathon runs on the same route as the 2004 Olympics but as it is held later in the year so you will not encounter the oppressive heat Radcliffe encountered on her fateful attempt to win the Olympic race - although the hills remain the same and it can be relatively warm at 20-22°C.

This 3-night trip to Greece includes your race entry, flights and stay at the Athenisan Callirhoe Hotel, located at the Acropolis and a few minutes walk from the finish at the historic Panathenaikon Stadium - the perfect location for sightseeing in Athens and race activities.

All this can be yours if you simply pledge to raise a minimum of £1,200 for us, then become part of this incredible marathons history.
