have to say i dont agree with these awards,

all ppls with ncf have to battle every day with treatments ect i really feel that its no good giving someone an award for things that sadley others cant do because of their health.

also we all know that its the genes of ppls that determine there life span and how well they are

Would you mind explaining what you mean a bit more? I didn't understand your initial point.
And also, I don't just think that it's down to genes that determine a PWCFs life span. The treatment involved has let us all live longer I'm sure. I wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for the extensive treatment on offer.
I have never seen the awards but, I would think that most appreciate the boost it gives. Sometimes (in my opinion) a boost, or a bit of recognition every now and then (non patronising of course!!) is a good thing. No matter how severe our individual CF is.
Thanks.

I think what Pepper is saying is that the awards are inevitably given to the only pwcf who are capable of doing something that can attract attention. Thus they are praising people for being less ill than others: and that is unfair on those who are too ill to achieve anything notable. I see what she means and have at times felt the same way about them.

However I have since changed my mind. The judges balance achievement against severity of illness. There is some unfairness in the nominations - some people who would be sure-fire winners may never get nominated, while others who's achievements might be considered lesser will. And like all judging procedures it always comes down to a matter of opinion, and all outcomes will have a degree of arbitrariness to them. But the intention is to avoid unfairness and arbitrariness wherever possible.

I think, maybe, that the purposes of the awards perhaps outweigh a little unfairness. They show the CF community that there is more to aspire to than simply surviving CF - which I know I have at times lost touch with! They also act as publicity. They attract the attention of possible donors and sponsors. They educate the public (a little). They can remind the doctors that pwcf are people - who have CF, and not a set of symptoms and syndromes. (Having said that, I can't recall a single doctor I've seen who needed that reminder! )

can understand both points of view. one good thing about the awards though is that they surely raise awareness of cf and hopefully a bit of money!!!
