Sweat glands on palms of hands

Hi, this is my first time using the forum. I've a 16 yr old son who has CF, I'm posting this on your forum in case this has happens to adults with CF. Over the last few months the skin on the palms of my sons hands have changed. The skin has changed colour to white, its hard to describe but something is happening under the skin as it isn't dry flaky skin. There are no erruptions. We have been seen at dermatology at hospital as he developed urticaria/allergy last time he had IV's. The hospital haven't seen anything like it before, they are wondering if it is something to do with his sweat glands with him having CF. Has anyone seen or heard of this before?

This is a new one to me too! I hope it's nothing serious and that the hospital get it sorted out.

Take care!

Richard.

Hi there

Here's a post form another forum site (posted address below), which may be the same thing your son is experiencing Sarah...there's a few other posts at that site about this subject which may be helpful...sounds similar anyhow.

Here's from the 2006 European Conference:

Aquagenic wrinkling of the palms (AWP) is characterized by the development of edematous white plaques on the hands when exposed to water. To date, 30 cases of AWP have been reported in the literature, 17 of which were CF pts. 6 of the CF pts at this clinic had this condition. Clinically, the whole of the hand appeared white in color, edematous, and excessivly wrinkled. In three cases, the reaction was so dramatic that finger movement was limited. In 4 cases, desquamation (sheeding of skin) occurred, mainly at the finger tips. The reaction persisted up to one hour post testing. The incidence of AWP in CF is likely to be much higher than the small numbers reported in the literature to date.

Joanna - thanks for posting that. I get this whenever my hands are in water for over a few minutes. Its is especially bad when having a bath, and I have at time resorted to wearing latex gloves taped at the wrists when in the bath! It can be fairly painful to move my fingers for about 30mins after a bath. It seems to vary in severity though..over the summer this year it was really bad, and I thought it was to do with the hot weather. My hands would start to go wrinkly if my palms were sweating.

I think it is probably massively under reported..I have never mentioned it to my cf team. My sister also had it.

I'm so glad that this has been helpful to people. I must admit, I'de never heard of it before either, I thought it must be fairly rare, but maybe it isnt.
One girl mentioned on the other forum (where I first read about it, address is on original post to Sarah) that using curcumin seemed to make a difference, although she didnt really know whether the two were related or not.

Hi my son gets this on his hands and feet when he is swimming alot in the summer. Have never really worried as it doesn't seem to bother him. Do you think I need to get him to wear gloves?

If it doesn't bother him, then I wouldn't worry I only wore gloves over the summer because for some reason my hands were very painful when they wrinkled.

If its not sore, I wouldn't bother..he would probably be embarrassed anyway
