Hi, My son is in hospital on I.V's at the moment and Tobi. He had his first three Tobi's and his blood readings were 0.2, but five days later they have now gone up to 2.6, does any one know why this is as they have now got to miss a dose because it as gone up so high. Is there an average blood count for Tobi? and have any of you had problems like this? He as also felt quite faint and nearly fainted when they were putting in a new line, this was not because he was scared or anything as he does not get nervous. from sunseasand.

A number of factors affect tobramycin blood levels — hydration level (is the patient drinking enough), kidney function, loss of lean-body-mass and hormonal changes (especially changes brought about by changes in steroid therapy).

The hospital will rule out important ones such as reduced kidney function, but probably won't be able to pin it down - it's something that happens, and is unpredictable.

Yes, tobramycin can affect the central nervous system, and so can factors which affect tobramycin levels. If he continues to feel faint after they have adjusted his tobramycin dose then this may be a separate issue that they will need to look into.

Hope your son benefits, gets well and is out and fighting fit again soon!

Take care, keep up the good work,

Richard.

Thanks Richard and mookymc for your advise, I've jotted down what you have said and will be asking his doctor about this. The nurses don't really know why his levels and fainting went like this, so I have been really worried. Yet again you guys know so much on here and are a great support and help, thanks again. He only has another week in hospital I hope and should be out just before xmas. from sunseasand.
