will any of you with cf drink?

Hi, This xmas will any of you with cf drink alcohol? If you will be drinking how much do you drink and is there any drugs you take that can have an effect if you drink with them? Also what age did you all start drinking alcohol, if you do, I mean did you secretly drink behind your parents back? Sorry for all the questions but my son is at that teenager age and though he seems really sensible and understands about looking after his self, I worry if some of his friends offer him drink when I am not there. Could it also effect his liver as he had liver problems when he was younger. Also did any of you smoke when you were a teenager or now behind your parents back. I know they can get up to all sorts at this age, but luckily he is not very street-wise and is more in than out with his mates on msn. from sunseasand.

Hi sunseasand
Yes i will drink over xmas, im on pred steriods and im going to drink, they say in moderation is ok. I did go out last xmas and drink, at the time i was taking ciproxin, on that night i'd only had two drinks, on the third drink i went all funny, i was sick all over the night club and had to go home, i was sick in the taxi also i was in a very bad way. the doctors told me it wasen't the cipro and i may have been spiked ? but i'd never drink while on cipro again after the state i was in.

and as far as smoking i did try once, horrible how people can smoke i will never know, it makes me so mad !

as a kid i always did what my mother told me physio, treatments, drugs i was the model child as far as CF i didnt drink or anything. my mother was strict with me having CF, my mother lost her life at 45 i belive for me to continue with my life.

im 38 now and owe my life to my mother.....

a few weeks ago i went out and had drinks whilst taking chlramphenicol i was fine. its the cipro im afraid of.
maybe other CF'S can drink on cipro but i cant, then again maybe i was spiked. but i wont be finding out again on cipro

hope ive helpd you kim x

Moderation is the key, really.

All anti-bios say you shouldn't drink, and ideally you shouldn't, but what it really means is that it's not sensible to get "drunk" on them. Apart from anything else, if you end up being sick, you could bring the drug back up too and that would totally negate the point.

As far as regular, non-anti-biotic drinking goes, I don't think it hurts to have a few over Christmas. Personally, I don't drink, because it goes straight to my chest and I feel it the next day, however little passes my lips - it makes my chest heavier and sticker and harder to clear, so I've learned just not to take any alcohol and avoid the problem.

With a teenage son, I'd recommend my parents' approach, which was never to deny me (or my non-CF brother) anything. They never let us drink to excess, but if we said we wanted a glass of wine with dinner, or a beer before-hand or whatever, they'd let us.

It serves mostly to take away, or massively reduce, the theory that drinking is "wrong" and therefore a kind of rebellion, meaning you're much less likely to drink behind your parents' backs.

Hope you have a good time over Christmas and that you all stay well and enjoy yourselves.

I guess it varies from CF person to the next. I drank the same as all my mates when I was younger - so Friday and Saturday nights out drinking a large volume, had hangovers the same as them. As i've got older I don't hardly drink at all, strangely I did drink a baileys tonight. I think your body tells you if you can drink or not, and now the whole drinking thing doesn't really appeal.

Hi S S S,started in my teens but fairly moderately.Smoked a few tabs as well to try and look clever,,bl..dy stupid of course, soon saw the error of my ways.
Drank fairly regularly in my twenties and thirties with the odd binge session but have calmed down since i was told i have cf related liver disease.
Now i drink moderately and sensibly as ordered to from my consultant. Funny thing is i dont really miss it.

Hi again just to add to what i said before, i did drink a lot in my teens, i used to go out every wk-end and get drunk, i used to take benolin by the bottle to stop the cough in the night clubs, i survived it tho.

These days like many others have said the drink kills me for a week after, my FEV1 drops for a few days. i think its the smoke in the pubs combined with the drink, but on the night i really enjoy myself and think what the heck ! then i wake up on the sunday looking blue thinking why did i bother. my mother was strict as far as CF but she did let me live my life, drugs and physio she was strict on.

CANT WAIT FOR APRIL BAN ON STINKING SMOKE

i dont have liver probems as yet.....

April though it was June? April is even better!

I drank from the age of 15 every week and used to get drunk same as all my mates.. (Stupidly used to smoke when drunk to) In late teens went out twice a week and prob drank a fair bit but never suffered hangovers and was fine getting up and going to work..
This xmas and New year I will have a few but its the smoke that effects me and sometimes I have to go home early..

I used to get drunk quite a bit when I went out (from age 15 to 20 - am now 26). My parents were great in making sure I got home safely etc.
I'm lucky in that so far I've never had any liver problems. I still drink regularly, ie 2-5 units 2-3 nights week, but this is at home, not in a smoky atmosphere, and throughout a few hours.
When I'm on IVs, certain antibiotics make me feel drunk more quickly, so I tend not to drink so much then, partly because I wouldn't allow myself to drive afer even one unit.
I have never smoked as my parents were VERY against it when I was a teen (partly because my dad was an ex smoker and partly due to CF).
I see no problem with moderate drinking as long as you're cautious when on antibiotics. After all, there's calories in them there bottles of wine!

Thanks a bunch for all your advise, it does sound like you lot do try and live your life to the full-and why not! I am so glad that you all sound very sensible in your approach about drinking as you have got older and just drink in moderation. Also that none of you smoke is really good. I now know and can stop worrying that if he is out and about and is offered a small drink he won't be rushed in an ambulance to the local A & E. I will try and discourage him though until he is a bit older. I don't think he as had any opportunities yet for drinking as I do keep a close eye on him, also I don't think he would like the taste, but like I have said you just don't know what they get up to half the time. Thanks you guys. from sunseasand.

I don't drink when on IV's, did go to a party once, danced and line broke, spent 5hrs in A&E getting a newone sorted. Now drink at special times, bike rallies, new yrs eve party, birthdays. Don't go out so much now (nearly 40) especially in winter, too bloomin cold.
Life too short to be too good. lol. Often designated driver these days but only when I want too. xxxx

I jus came over from the talk bored, hope ya dont mind.

Smoking
basically i'm 15 years, have never smoked and never will. I think it's disgustin. I think my mates wud go MENTAL at me if they caught me smokin! I cant stand passive smokin either so roll on the ban!!!
Drinking
I do have the ocasional drink, the same as my mates, my doctors always said you've got to live your teeenage life, dont let cf stop u! I dont drink often, jus wen we hav parties. My parents have seen me drunk but i've never been in sucha state that i dont know what im doing completely and i never get hangovers!! jus feel very rough and tired from da late night!

I think your son, will do things that are best for him! I've always gone by wat i feel ryt! I never drink wen im on atibiotics because i worry i myt av a reaction! i look after my drunken mates when im on antibiotics - making sure they all get in the taxi n all!And wen im older i'll be the driver when im on antibiotics! I think because my parents have never made a fuss about not drinkin and smokin, i've never had 2 rebel and hav gone by wat i c as ryt 4 me, of course my parents have always guided me not to smoke and binge tho!

dno if dat helps

Yeah thanks for that, when you lot say that you don't drink when on antibiotics is this only IV's or just oral antibiotics or both? and if you do drink do you all feel really ill for the next day or two and as your health declined since you all started drinking? I know mogzy your right not to keep on about it to him and that it would probably make him rebel. It is really hard being a mum to a child with an illness, I just want to protect all the time from anything that harms him. But then I have to keep telling myself that if I want him to be free, I have to let him go and that way he will come back to me. from sunseasand.
