SunseaSand,

I wouldn't stress too much over the antibiotic/drinking issue. The only antibiotic that you can never drink on is metronidazole, which isn't used often in Cfers. The doctors would warn patients of this anyway.

During my time at uni I took alcohol whilst on both orals and IVs, but I never drunk to excess, and not very often. Generally when I was on IVs I would be feeling too unwell to bother going out anyway! When I did drink though, I did not appear to suffer unduly because of it. The next day after effects were the same as when I wasn't on ivs - tiredness from a late night, and a grotty chest from smokey atmosphere.

Now I don't bother drinking on antibiotics, but mostly because I tend to take my car. I often feel sick on orals and drinking makes this worse, so not worth the hassle. When on ivs I am more concerned that I am in a fit state to make up my last dose at night, so avoid being under the influence.

I guess I'm saying that with time your son will come to his own conclusions about the pros and cons of drinking on antibiotics. But if he does choose to do so, its not the end of the world and would not necessarily make him more unwell, if done in moderation. Drinking in excess is a different matter..but the dangers of this exist regardless of antibotic use.

Everything in moderation is the answer If you are worried it would be best to ask the CF about this.
