using their own?

Hi, I have been thinking why pwcf should use their own cutlery and cups etc. I mean even though there is a only slight risk of infection from sharing, even after they have been washed properly, I'm sure it seems more sensible using their own. When we go to a dentist we don't have instruments put into our mouths where they have been just washed in tap water. I thought about it and imagine a person at the side of us in a restaurant who you know has T.B or pseudomondas, a bad cold/flu, plus loads of other things, would you use their spoon after a quick wash? I have worked in some restaurants and believe me some do not wash the cutlery very well. Maybe this is where one of the places is where they pick up all sorts. I know...I know... I can't wrap them in cotton wool, but such a simple thing on giving them their own cup and cutlery in the home and restaurants seems to me common sense. Also I was wondering why do hospitals not all use throw away plastic cutlery? I am sure ours use to, but now they are using metal ones. Anyway they are just my views and how do we know we carriers are not carrying pseudomondas and passing it on. I know a lot of the population have it, but I wonder if we carriers have it more. Probably not been many studies on us carriers as all the money is for research. from sunseasand.

I can see the point your making Sunseasand, but personally I think my son would have been horrified if I had produced his own cutlery and crockery on a family outing to a restaurant! We wanted to keep his life as normal as possible, whenever possible. I think it's sensible to avoid obvious risks,as in not socialising with other pwcf, and trying to avoid people with colds etc, (not always possible in school though) but I think they need to build up a certain amount of natural immunity too.

I think it's also important to remember that bugs such as pseudo are all around us anyway. The conditions in a pwcf's lungs need to be right for pseudo/any other bug to take hold (for want of a better phrase).

As Karen says we too are avoiding obvious risks, but Ocean is going to have as normal a life as possible. If he saw us treating him any differently to his brothers then I don't think he'd be very happy (he isn't already, but there's not a lot that can be done about age differences!!).

Hi,

Most pwcf will get pseudomonas no matter what we do or dont do. Its a fact of life for people with cf. And once its there, its very hard to get rid of.
My daughter has had it for about 18 years now, sometimes it shows, sometimes it doesnt, but it is there. She has never been ill because of it though, she never has a cough with it. She actually has a much worse cough with Staph.
She is in hospital now as she has a pulmonary embolus, which they think was caused by her being immobile for so long in hospital. She was really ill a few weeks back with Septecaemia caused by her appendix. She almost died and was very very ill. Her kidneys also failed and she was briefly put on dialysis.
But even during all this, her lungs were great and all sputum tests grew nothing.
But next month, she may grow psudomonas, who knows. But I do know one thing, she has always said to me how grateful she is that I have never treated her any different from her brothers, and while she knows that there are certain precautions she has to take sometimes,she would be horrified at the thought of having her own cutlery and plate etc.
This is very much a personal thing, but it really wont avoid pseudomonas, cos its all around us. Some people with cf just get it sooner than others.

My Auntie swears by wiping her cutlery with vinegar when she goes into restaurants to kill bacteria, I don't know if it actually works but it makes them look nice and shiny

We could just never take our kids out, any of them ,cf or not.Then they would all stay quite healthy, Isolated but healthy

I know what you lot are all saying I know, and I do want to treat him as normal as possible, but it is hard. It was actually my son who suggested that he wanted his own knife & fork/cup as my other child kept coming home from school full of flu, so he was a bit paranoid when he kept washing his cup. I am sure I also read once from the cf trust that this was advisable. I will leave it up to my son to decide really as he is a teenager, but thanks you guys for your comments I do know what you lot mean.
Trollydolly thanks also for your advise. So glad that your daughter is on the mend. Can understand what you were going through when she was so ill, as our son was touch and go for 6 months when he was younger. Weird how stress effects you really, I remember not caring about anything else at the time only our son and just remember my hair started fulling out from stress and serevere tiredness. My son is also in hospital at the moment and hopefully comes out just before xmas. Hopefully your daughter will be out soon, send her my love. from sunseasand.
