Hello, my 10 week old CF has just got his third infection.
I have been reading some of the questions people have been asking and i'm a little concerned because I don't understand a lot of the infections they can get and what causes them, for example pseudo...whats this?

Does anyone know where you can look these types of things up. I obviously don't want to rap him up in cotton wool but would like to eliminate some of the causes if possible.

I feel like i'm never going to be educated as far as cf is concerned and worry i'll do something that will harm him.

Also is it common this time of year and the fact that he's so young to have three colds in a row, I remember my 3 year old wocf having about 8 colds in his first year and he was also born in the winter. will this build his immune system or is this a myth?

Firstly we have all been there and thought the exact same thing!!!You will soon get up to date on all of the cf talk and bugs that grow.
Generally I think all cf's, as babies have a lower immune system. No harm to wrap them up in cotton wool the first year anyway as they are going to pick up more bugs the more they are out and about this time of year.(let baby go wild come the warm weather)
Pseudemonas,Staph,Haemophalus etc are all c.f. bugs that grow in the lung and can cause problems if left untreated.Generally throat swabs taken every few months can identify them and treatment given.
This web site is excellent for info and an ear for a moan!!!Also the cf trust sends out loads of info so give them a ring and you will be surprised all the things it covers.
Good luck with baby, the cf babies are toughies from a special place in God's pocket!!!!

Hi

Im like you dont recognise all these names but we have just been in hospital for IV antibiotics to treat a staph(!?) infection but still not sure what this is and if it has gone, what has caused it etc, etc. Can anyone tell me how long they take to clear up? My little one is only 13 weeks and not sure if it is normal to catch an infection so early? Also he is very grumpy at the moment but not sure if this is related to the staph or just normal baby stuff!!

What sort of infections are you getting?

Hello my 10 week old sam had his first infection at 6 weeks, he had a moderate growth of staph aurious this was treated by increasing his antibiotic (fluclox) to 4 times a day instead of twice for 14 days. As soon as he was finished he caught scanty growth of something or another (so forgetful!) fluclox apparently doesn't work for this so he had amoxicillin for 14 days. He's just finished this and has now been put on a completely different antibiotic while we wait for the cough swab to come back. It feels never ending, can't wait for the sunshine! from what i understand, the cure depends on how bad the infections is.

The grumps could be because of anything, I know at the moment sam gets quite moody at night and i think this is down to wind

So I think infections this young can be normal especially at this time of year.

Like you i'm learning and i'm hoping that when summer comes things will be easier.

If you are worried about anything give your CF Consultant a call. When I used to take my children to the Doctors, he used to end up calling their Consultant as he knew nothing about CF atall. Dont hesitate to give your CF Consultant a call if you have any worries or questions
I have 2 children with CF. Our previous family Doctor was useless. Our son was the first case of CF he had come across in 35 years of being a Doctor. Our son was 3 when diagnosed, then a week later our daughter was diagnosed too as having CF.
