CF symptoms in non-CF. A matter of interest

Hi all,

Some years ago, I think Louis had just started school so about 1995, I had a discussion with the GOSH CF team at the time, about wether CF carriers, i.e. parents of PWCF were more likely to show some of the syptoms of the condition.

There was apparently a study being done, I think in Southampton, but not sure. I have never been able to find anything published about that study.

Now in our case, many members of our family, on both sides, have suffered with serious chest problems, both smokers and non smokers. For example, I personally produce a lot of very thick mucus and have always had chest infections (which can be a real b*@+er being a singer). We also have a few diabetics in the family and more than our fair share of thyroid + and - sufferers. The thyroid controls metabolism in respect of digestion and enzyme production. We also have a lot of asthmatics. Several of those afflicted are confirmed carriers.

Now is it just coincidental that family members show individual or multiple symptoms of CF, OR can it be possible that those carriers amongst us, who all have a defective No 7 Gene, suffer with these symptoms as a predetermined result of carrying that defective gene.

I am really interested in knowing if other families are in the same boat

We too have a long line of medical problems on both my mum and dad's side, although me and my brother are the only ones to actually have CF as far as we know.

I have also noticed how my boyfriend, who isn't a carrier, and didn't used to get colds or chest infections, suddenly gets lots. And he generally gets Staph. I guess living with me has somehow weakened his immune system.

It's even worse as he gets 'man colds' and chest infections, which you know actually result in the man being convinced he is dying, even though he just has a sniffle.

I'd be interested as well, to see what the study had shown. One thing with my family aswell is, almost everyone has chest problems on both sides and about 80% are asthmatic. a couple of smokers on my dad's side, but none on my mum's that I can think of.

If the chest thing is common, then I wonder if those of us who are carriers are incubating say staph or pseudo, which does not effect us as such, but, which may be passed on to our kids/siblings wcf, with the usual results.

Maybe we should also be treated to stop cross infection, after all that is why PWCF are "isolated" from other PWCF when they are in hospital.

Sorry, just doing a bit of lateral thinking here

My twin Brother wocf get lots of coughs and chest infections,so much so that he was tested for CF last year, but it was negative.

My Grampa on my Dad's side gets lots of chest problems and all the women on my Dad's side of the family have asthma.

Just to throw a spanner in the works my family were/are all very healthy in the main - my Grandad smoked until he was about 50, but got plenty of exercise as he had an outdoor job, he lived to be 96. My parents are both well - my Dad did get allot of bronchitus for a period in his 30s but that was probably to do with stress - he doesn't now he is retired. My sister gets sinus problems and lots of colds but she is working her socks off in a stressful job!
I personally think that chest problems in carriers is coincidence - at one point there was a rumour going round that carriers are actually healthier than 'normal' people but I can't remember if this was backed up by research so could be dodgy!! Does anyone know if there is any research done in this area

What kind of singing do you do Fatman?

I had wondered about Jasmines dad and if he actually HAD cf, tho apparantly unlikely as Jasmine wouldnt be here , and he doesnt have any common genes as he got himself tested (probably only time he thought about CF, when he thought HE might have it)tho being Egyption there could be an uncommon one in there somewhere.
he always has chest infections, gut problems, wierd aches and pains. He has clubbed fingers and he goes wrinkly in water very quicky. He is very short compared to his 2 brothers (1 now RIP Amir) and it cant be bad nutrition in Egypt otherwise the other 2 wouldnt be so gi-normous.

emma x, whohas a bit dodgy sinuses but nothing else to mention
