Ok, i stand a chance of making a fool of myself here after teasing Dan about it!

The answer was that sweetners could not make the body of someone with CFRD produce insulin, because the problem in CFRD is that the pancreas is not working properly and therefore cannot produce insulin (or at least not at the rate needed), whether it is stimulated or not.
