I'm worried...

I'm worried about my boyfriend.
Ironically, its me who has Cystic Fibrosis!
He worries too much about me, and I'm worried that he's going to make himself ill by worrying about me so much.
I've tried explaining to him that he doesn't need to worry, but he says that he loves me and of course he does.
I'm having a portacath fitted, and he read the possible risks. He read that mechanical failure of the port could lead to death. He looked so worried. I explained that the chances of that were virtually nil, but because it was a risk, they had to put it.
I love him so much and wish I could protect him from my health, but by doing that I didn't always tell him things, which upset him.
I'm so scared about the port, and last night was at the stage where I was questioning if I was doing the right thing. I know deep down that I am, but I'm so scared, but I don't want him to know how scared I am, because he'll worry more than he is doing now!
Does anyone have any advice?

I know I can't stop you worrying but lots of folk with cf have ports fitted, as my son has, and they are the best thing since sliced bread! Good luck and once it is done you will both wonder what it was all about. Does your bf have a chance to discuss things with your cf team. Perhaps it would help

I've had ports for the last 16 years and they're great! I'm currently waiting to have my new one put in and believe me the big day can't come soon enough as far as I'm concerned.
The procedure itself is VERY straightforward so nothing to worry about there. As far as your boyfriend is concerned you could explain how much easier it will be for you to do your treatment and therefore your health will probably improve along with your own sense of well being - so he can look forward to a happy chilled out girlfriend.

Have you considered having some cognitive therapy as a couple - it does sound as though HIS worrying is preventing him being supportive, which must be difficult for both him and you. Does he worry about you taking any risks like driving a car or is it just the CF he worries about?

Best wishes for the op.
