Heel prick test

Hello, This is my first time on this site and already i feel like i'm not alone.

I have a 3 year old boy called lewis and a 9 week old baby called sam.
About 5 weeks ago Sam's heel test came back showing signs of CF, The next day he was in the hospital having the sweat test done, This of course came back positive!
So far he is being treated for his 2nd infection. mostly I think we're coping are main problem is Flucloxicillin, He hates it! it's so upsetting forcing him to take it, everything else he takes without a grumble, does anyone else have this problem? i've tried every way to get it down him nothing really works he just spits it out.

PS I think its fantastic that they have added cf to the heel prick test in my area, Sam was the first baby to come back positive. Obviously the sooner they get diagnosed the better.

Our daughter also hated flucox when she was a baby (have you tried it? it tastes awful) and the doctors ended up putting her onto Augmentin Duo which tastes far nicer.

Maybe you could discuss this with her clinic? Or perhaps there is another antibiotic that you can have instead?

Good luck with it,

Joanne

Hi and welcome to the boards!

Which fluclox have you got? I believe it comes in a couple of colours/flavours. You could try asking for the white/pink one depending on what you already have. Ocean wasn't keen on it when he was little, but now (19months) opens his mouth for it quite happily. I guess you're already pointing the syringe into the cheek and squeezing it out gently, etc.

Fingers crossed he stays relatively well.

Take care

Yep, been there twice. All we could do was persevere. Some doses got spat out, but in the end, they got used to it.

Dylan's pet hate at the moment is soluble prednisolone steroids, he HATES the taste of them! Had to give him his last dose today, and half of it ended up down his jumper where he spat it out!

Good luck, and welcome to the forum.

I assume you're talking about fluclox in syrup form? I hated the stuff, it really isn't very tasty. My parents diluted it with drink(not alcoholic!) from what i remember, it didn't taste great, but it wasn't as bad.

Hi kelly,
Like someone said there are some different colours of fluclox and i think they do vary in taste, my little boy likes the white one but he wont have the pink or orange one, he even asks for it now when its tea time and bed time it doesnt bother him of course he wont like it at first but it will become rountine before you know it. I was like you i remember at first sat on the bed wi all the meds surrounding me thinkig right which one first i gave him one and then another then i was sweting coz its hard then he puked them up so i tried again and managed giving him all of them then he puked them al back up along wi his breakfast. Noah was 3 months when he got diagnosed so he liked to resist and coz he could see better at that age he cried when he saw them. It seems alot to do at first its all trial and error putting them in yogurts and apple puree or you know whatever. I used to mix all 3 ketavites and vit K crushed and vit E all in wi ketavite liquid and give them all at once then its done. Fluclox i didnt have a real problem wi all that much.

Thinking of you Lisa x

We put Maddie's in her milk.

She won't drink milk now unless it's pink!

Hope you find an easier way of getting it down little Sam.

Welcome to the boards by the way.

Take care and good luck. Lisa x

Yes i have tasted it... its horrible!
This is all really new to us and I have no idea about the choices, maybe this is something we can talk about with the specialist next time.

Thank you x

Hi Shadow
Thank you for your reply, we've pointed the syringe in every direction and have found that pouring a little bit on a spoon is a little easier.

fingers crossed he starts to like it!

Thanks Kelly

Hi Kelly,

and welcome to the boards.
I'm Kaye, mum to Leah, 10 months, with CF.
Congrats on your new baby!

We found that the Fluclox that worked best for Leah, taste wise, when she was tiny, was the white one, the company was Floxapen. However we've now changed to a red one because she has just cut her first tooth and the Floxapen is full of sucrose. How ever it definatley helped her to get used to the taste, and now she takes everything (virtually) with no problem.

Hope this helps and your little one stays well.

K xx

Hi Lisa

Thanks for your reply.

I'll have to look into different flavours.

At the moment its just a little difficult as he's on fluclox twice a day and amoxicillin three times a day, luckily amox to him is like chocolate cake to me! hopefully in time he'll get use to it as this is what all the health professionals keep telling me

I wouldn't say the medication will get worse as he gets older, but I think it's fair to say that there will be times when he needs worse medications, and that these times will be more common as he gets older.

At the same time, research goes on all the time so we might expect new, easy-to-take medicines to replace harsher medicines. For instance, twenty years ago a new antibiotic came along called ciproflaxacin, which can be taken by tablet, has very mild side-effects and is very effective against pseudomonas. By taking this antibiotic whenever I got a "cold" I was able to avoid the need for intravenous antibiotics for more than ten years!

Take care, keep up the good work!

Richard.

Hi Kelly,
It used to break my heart when Isaac first started the fluclox, he was 6 days old. Hes now 25 wks and takes it no probs. Its reassuring that they do eventually get used to it.
When he was tiny I used to gradually squeeze it in the corner of his mouth when taking his bottle. He soon let us know when he didn't want to do this anymore and started taking it willingly!
However I do still use this technique when he has new antibiotics as some of them taste soooo foul!
Isaac also prefers the branded version called 'Floxapen', just make sure that the Doctor or pediatrician writes the branded one on the prescription as the pharmacy doesn't always like giving out the more expensive one unless it says so. I'm quite lucky as I used to work in my local pharmacy for 5 yrs so my pharmacist gives me what I ask for!!!
Good luck with Sam xxxx
