I have bought some Tixylix glycerol today for Leahs cough and sore throat does anyone know if this is ok to use, i spoke with the pharacist at boots and he said it would ne ok to use as it will only soothe her throat and not surpress the cough. Can pwcf use cough medicines just out of curiosity?

Take care

I've not heard cough medicines not being ok for pwcf, but I personally wouldn't bother as they don't actually do anything in my experience. I'd offer honey and lemon to drink and give paracetamol suspension if she was in any pain. I can't rememeber how old Leah is (??should know this shouldn't I!?), but honey is unsuitable for under 1's.

Hi sazg, I did ask my son's consultant about using cough medicines and he did advise that they are not to be used. Generally they suppress the cough and pwcf need to cough off the mucus to help the lungs. I suppose it depends also what sort of cough it is, is it just a tickle sort of one in the back of the throat, or a deep down bark sort of cough? The tickle one may benefit a bit of honey/lemon in warm water like ladybird mentioned, but generally I would try and avoid cough medicines. from sunseasand.

Leah is 15 months now the Glycerol is just mainly to soothe the tickle of the cough and the throat (she doesnt seem to like it anyway). It is a bit of a phlegmy cough and only seems to be on her chest in a morning, but she seems to cough more aswell when she has just had her antibiotics. I will try the honey and lemon 2moro when i get chance to get to the shops.

thanks guys

my experience of this is that couch medicines which supress the cough eg benelyn are a major no no as sunseasand has said but Tom has often been told to use Soothers and the like for a tickly cough . frankly I'm not convinced they did any good at all but made him feel he was able to control the cough a bit.

If Leah's cough is phlegmy then she needs to cough! More physio may also help, as it helps drive the mucous from the small airways into the larger airways where it is easier to cough up - though there are limits on how much physio a 15-month-old can usefully do!

We were told at our hospital that the only thing suitable for a cough in a CFer is simple linctus, which soothes the throat from all the coughing.
