Hi there

Does anyone use Probiotic drinks/yoghurts etc when they are on IV's?

Is it recommended that you drink them in order to prevent Candida infections in Gastrostomy sites?

Just wondering what other people do

Alex

Which one to take depends on what you want it for.

I have two Yakults a day because my long term IVs strip out all the nice friendly happy bacteria. Activia & Actimel don't do the job in my case.

My dietitian went through it with me

I give Ocean Solgar's Acidophilus as it was too much hassle finding the right yoghurts (many are a con imho) so I went for the real stuff! Works a treat too, we definately notice the difference if we forget to give it to him for a few days

I found this post really helpful. Ive just had 6 weeks of IV's (finished 2 weeks ago) and still having problems with my tummy.

I bought "Potent Acidophilus" (from Holland and Barrett), so will see how it goes. How long before you noticed a difference with them?

Thanks

Shouldn't take long to notice a difference, but you'll notice it more when you stop taking it - if you catch my drift . Not sure how beneficial anything is from H&B either, give them a go and if not then try something else. We notice the difference between brands - Solgar being the most effective for Ocean, although haven't tried the Lamberts ones Emma recommends. Might give that one a go next.

Sweetpea you may notice within a couple of days - I know i do. I get ones from Napiers Herbal place in Edinburgh / internet, as they don't have to be kept in the fridge.

Holland and Barrett ones are also OK (the strong ones) but have to be refirgerated which makes them less convenient.

I swear by them, IVs or not.
