I just e-mailed the woman who wrote it - I'll paste it.

Hello Amanda,

I read your article with interest and I just wanted to share my point of view with you.

We have been told that Fraser has a 'mild form' of cystic fibrosis. This was the same as my parents were told about me in 1970.
Since then I attended school with no worse an attendance record that my classmates. I left at sixteen and started working full time. I got married, I travelled, I skied and still do when I get the opportunity. I stopped working full time after the birth of my son in 2003 and now work three full days a week. The main reason I work part time is so I don't need to take time off for hospital visits.

CF varies enormously form person to person. Fraser may well be one of those who, like me will lead an absolutely normal life. He will take lots of medication, but that will seem normal to him because he will grow up with it and it will be as routine as cleaning his teeth.

Unless Fraser's health takes a dramatic turn for the worse, I see no reason why his dad should stand down. I think one of the best things you can do for with a child with CF, is carry on as normal as much as you can. I think the Brown's will make excellent parents to this little boy and I have absolutely no doubt that if standing down becomes necessary then he will do so.

I saw that column this morning and have had it in my bag since I ripped it out of the paper at 8am this morning, intending to email a reply.

My husband is out of the house for around 80hours a week working shifts. He HAS to work and I HAVE to cope with three children under 6, including 1 with CF. In November he had a total of 4 days off due to overtime he can't really refuse.

Why the Browns shouldn't cope just as well I don't know. I agree with Strawbz, we carry on as we would have without CF in the family, there's no other way and we have to take Ocean's brothers into account too. I won't go into my political opinions, but this was such a pathetic article I'm not sure it deserves a response now.

I loathe the Daily Mail with a passion, and this just enforces the reasons why. Reactionary, offensive, myopic and counter-productive, it's a publication that never ceases to raise my ire. I stopped reading any of it until this.

And as for double standards - can't imagine they're going to have much of a problem with David Cameron leading the Tories in office, are they, when arguably his son needs more day-to-day care than Fraser may ever need.

But that 's to miss the point entirely: a person's children (and extended family for that matter) should have no bearing on the jobs they can or cannot perform. If they are happy with their arrangements and don't feel them detrimental, who are we to suggest otherwise?

I've never read such a load of complete sh*t. It is this sort of defeatist attitude that gets you nowhere and just annoys everyone else. She's clearly not got a clue about CF and is just jumping up and dowm on the band wagon, I really hate people who try and further their own carear by cashing in on other peoples misfortunes, especially when they are writing from a sdantpoint of total ignorance.

It's pretty sick to use his child to discredit him. But then the newspaper is not known as the Daily Hate(Mail) for nothing.

Amanda Platell is unmarried, has no kids, and knows s*d all about CF from what I've just read. I don't know why she feels qualified to comment on this anyway.

The lady is misguided and ill-informed. The Daily Mail is a right wing paper and i feel this personal problem of the Brown's is being used to have a dig at the Labour party/government. I'm not overly concerned with the Labour party, so i have no need to defend them.

This is not responsible journalism in my opinion. I'm am fuming at the nonsense this lady has written.

Maybe she should be invited to spend a day with a person with CF or with a family who have a child/ren with CF and then re-write her column in a more informing way. She can come here and get an insight into CF, family life and having a husband who works full time doing a job he loves to support his family. Ignorance is annoying and this woman clearly fits the bill.

Unbelievable.

Words can't describe how much I HATE the Daily Mail. But the book 'Is it just me or is everything sh*t?' has a fantastic go at it. Have a look. Might cheer us all up after reading that display of complete ignorance.

life is hard on parents and unless you have complete support from both its even harder.

i know for myself my husband and i are still together but only just after loseibg our daughter in february of this year.

i was always the stonger parent so i took the responsibilty and i have had 33 years of unbelievable joy watched as my daughter had an 18th 21st marriage and i know she would have got a transplant if it had been ment to be but it wasnt.

Where the hell do these people get their information from, she clearly has done no research, it's a paper i don't buy very often, and will certainly not be buying in the future
