hello all - I have been told that I have "early portal hypertension". Has anyone else got this and what are my chances of it not developing further - I'm now worried to death that I'll end up having to have a transplant when I thought my liver disease was well under control - I've been taking urso for about 5 years and it was started when my liver displayed no scarring so I'm really disappointed that things have progressed as i thought urso was supposed to be good at stopping deterioration if given early enough. Any advice would be very much appreciated. many thanks.

Hiya Cally. I've got what I would call moderate portal hypertension - its fairly predictable that you would get this with liver disease at some point. Urso isn't a cure by any means - they don't even know why it works or how effective it is - its just a cover-all drug thay they put us on! My hypertension causes varices in the oesophogus that can bleed but equally, can be treated by banding (done by endoscopy), and I have varicose veins on my abdomen. Others on here have developed ascites - build up of fluid in the abdomen wall, but this is far down the line for you, if it's there at all!

I have had hypertension for 15 years maybe? and I'm still doing OK. It's a pain, but can be dealt with my medication eg propranalol (betablockers)and medical management of symptoms eg banding. I wouldn't worry about it too much at this stage, the main thing that they've picked up on it. What is it that they've noticed aboit you that indicated portal hypertension, if I may ask?

Thanks for replying Fic - it was just picked up through my routine liver scan.
