I prefer to think of CF as a "life-threatening" illness, not a "terminal" one. "Terminal" to me means there is no hope and we do have hope - lot's of it, so I would never associate the word "terminal" with CF.

I don't think of CF as "Terminal" either. It doesn't seem like the right word to use. "Terminal" suggests that the docs can say "I'm afraid you have less than 6 months to live" or something equally imminent. That's not true for me yet, and it's certainly not true for the babies and children!

Sooner or later it's probably going to get me, but I don't dwell on it.

As I said to someone just the other day...if I have a mental moment and forget my Green Cross Code I could walk under a bus (a popular pass time in our city centre) and become worm food.

Then it would not be CF which was terminal, but my own stupidity

Hi guys

CF is both.

According to health professionals, CF is the main causal factor in the death of sufferers = terminal

According to DLA dept, an illness is ONLY terminal if the life expectancy is less than 6 months.

I guess CF could be called terminal, as it is going to be what kills the majority of pwcf. I personally don't think of it as terminal, not just because I don't want to, but I think of terminal as having a cetain period left to live, like six months. I would only class CF as terminal in the later stages when treatments are failing to work and the remaining option was a transplant, for example. As most people waiting on a transplant list sadly know they only have X amount of months/years left.

I thought that i had read in the Cf Trust leaflet that i was given when Ruby was diagnosed that CF is

A Chronic illness...

I don't think it is a terminal illness because of what others have said above???

I know CF is often referred to as terminal illness as it fits the criteria of being such as it is incurable and irreversible.

The term is so emotive and negatively loaded though - as people have already said, if someone is terminally ill you think of them having a few months at most to live. When I look in the mirror I don't see a terminally ill person, I see someone with a chronic condition, acne, and a bad haircut; I'm well and loving life.

Hopefully, with the advances in gene therapy and new medications, there will in time be no question of CF being considered a terminal illness.

Actually I think there is a slight medical difference in 'life threatening' and 'terminal'. I'm not quite sure, and stand to be corrected but a medical person told me that when a disease is in its final stages, then it is classed as terminal. But otherwise, it is life threatening...
