Just out of interest. All the newspaper articles are quoting the life expectancy of CF as 31. I thought it was more like 35-36...is this just bad journalism? And if it is 31, then why is it 36.8 in the USA?!

It is supposedly 31 but oddly varies between centres. In America a guy called Dr Warwick who invented The Vest has an average of 41at his clinic, he is obsessed with CF and very aggressive in his treament of it. He's in his 70's now. There is alot about him on google. I get most of my information from Cystic-L which is an American site. You shouldn't gte bogged down by stats though, remeber they are just an average and everyones case is very individual.

I think the CFT say the average is 31 which is probably why they are all quoting it.

Isn't the difference all in how they are measuring the average? i.e the mean or median? I don't think the averages quoted are actually measuring the same thing.

ahhh i'm not bogged down by the stats at all, don't worry, but some people are....i just think if journalists are going to quote a figure - they should get it right, and if they're going to quote an average it should be of the whole nation, not from just one clinic? Surely the trust has the "proper" average?

Yeah, i heard that Dr Warwicks clinic actually has an average of 47...and some in the US have an average of 28 - major difference there,i don't think it varies that much here thank god. I've been speaking to some people whilst over here in America about some of Dr Warwicks methods and attitudes and they are interesting!

It's an interesting article, not least because Dr Walters herself has CF
