got you. sounds like the sound card needs re-installing (the drivers), you could try that as a starting point.

follow this..

start

settings

controll panell

add or remove programmes

.. search for a programme with the word audio in it.. i.e realtek ac'97 audio or something like that

make a note of what it is called.. as you will need this later

click change/remove

and uninstall there

when uninstalled you will need to use the original disk that supports your audio driver.. or let me know what it said before.. i.e realtek audio .. and ill locate the driver on the net for you to download

Nothing with the word Audio in. The only thing I can think of on the list is Realplayer?

What will happen if we don't re-install it? Will it just leave us with no sound.

Our computer is an old one from a Uni library and we're hoping to get a new one for xmas so if it's not too drastic then I'll probably just get rid of it and leave it gone!

control panel

add or remove programes

....now please list all entries you find in there, here, and I/we will tell you which is your sound card drivers/program (if it still is installed).

Then we can take it from there.

New computer sounds good!

wierd, your list does not show any sound card driver installed

without me fixing your pc on site.. your only option is to remove your sound card when your pc is fully detatched from the mains.. and install a new sound card

basic ones start at about £7

.. try Maplin at http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?ModuleNo=32030&doy=30m11

maybe the computer uses audio on the motherboard rather than a separate sound card?

if available:

go to control panel, but go to sound and audio devices, click hardware (last tab), hopefully 'realtek audio' or similar will be listed there, double click on it, go to driver (last tab) and do the uninstall thing as Tim said before.

good luck

For drivers you dont go into add remove programs.

To check if there is a problem with the sound card do as follows:

Right click My computer and select Manage.

A window should apear with the choice device manager in there click on that.

A selection should appear in the right section window in that selection click on network adaptors.

A drop down menu should appear with your network adaptors in and your sound card should have a name like mentioned before.

If it has a yellow triangle with a black exclamation mark in there it has a fault with it.

I hope this helps sorry but i can only tell you how to check if it has a error sorry but its better than nothing . I might be able to do more but im more of a hands on type of person but im sure someone else could help once they no the error .

lulahell, there's no "manage" there, so I've gone for the option above you.

Just one question, before I do uninstall anything how is it going to affect the computer? What exactly am I uninstalling? This is my hubby's main source of listening to the news in his home country, etc so I don't really want to wipe that for the sake of (hopefully) a few more weeks of this noise.

Basicly if you un-install a sound card you wont have any sound from your speakers at all i think it would be best to wait for a few weeks till x-mas.

if you cannot be without any sound.. do not uninstall yourself

u need someone to do it for you

a quick option might be to get a USB sound card from a pc store and use headphones or a seperate speaker system

Ok, so looks like you have just sound from your motherboard and no separate sound card.

Go to:
>Control panel> Sounds and Audio Devices Properties

On the opening of the page there should be a little speaker icon in the top right, not what the words say next to it.

Then Click the 'Hardware' tab

List the names in the 'Devices' box.
There should be one called something like 'audio drivers'.

From this we can detect which audio drivers you need to re-install i believe.

Good Luck
