The height of laziness - a story about a flu jab

Hello!

As you may know it's not like me to moan about the service at Gartnavel.

I was up at Garters(Gartnavel) the other day receiving my regular four weekly port flush and i enquired about getting a flu vaccine. I've had problems getting a flu vaccine from my GP and so i thought Garters might have some spare for me. As it turned out Garters did have a flu vaccine available for me, so i was hoping they(the CF nurses) would be able to administer it, sadly they couldn't/wouldn't.

I was told to take home the vaccine they had given me, then arrange an appointment with the district nurse, go to the GP's, sit in the waiting room and finally get it administered by the district nurse. Why oh why couldn't the CF nurses administer it when i was sitting in front of them at Gartnavel????!!! Why do i have to arrange an appointment with my district nurse and go to the hassle of arranging these things when the CF nurses could have just put it in my arm? It's a waste of mine and NHS time.

I understand it's difficult for them to administer the vaccine to all their patients, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't give it to any of them? You should serve as many patients as best you can and make the best arrangements for those you can't serve. You don't shaft them all for the sake of making your own job easier.

When i saw the district nurse to get my flu jab, she was bemused that i had turned up with the vaccine in my pocket and bemused that the CF nurses hadn't administered it.

This is all just my opinion Sorry if you were looking for a good story, my title was somewhat misleading. It's not really a story, more of a moan.

It doesn't sound like the staff at Gartnavel are very helpful. My CF team at Wythenshawe said that they didn't have any few jabs till mid November an that they would ring my gp and organise an appointment(which they did). Then at my last clinic appointment they asked again if i'd had it. Such a shame that the standards in the clinics around the UK is so different.

Argh - Tw*ts. What reason did they have not giving you the vaccine?! I'm so sick of my friends getting meh treatment from various centers....all those teams should come and see what they should be doing by visiting wythenshawe! Pfft! And you had to enquire about the vaccine yourself?! Shouldn't they be reminding you (bear in mind is is now the END of november)?! Argh *stomps feet*

I had a similar experience to this at the Brompton a few years back now.
I had finished my ivs and specially spent an extra night in hospital so that I could have the jab given to me the next day.

When it came to the time to have it, nurses didn't want to do nor did the doctor. They said it was something to do with the way it is given, it is not so straight forward, but I wasn't convinced!!

Eventually booked with my GP to have it done.

Hi Anders

I too got my flu jab from gartnavel last week (not administered just given to me in the box). Like you say it would be a lot easier for us if they could just stick it in your arm - was annoys me as well is that I dont know the reason why they dont give it.

Now I have to make an appointment at my GP to have it done, and to be honest I'll probably never get round to it and it'll lie in my fridge til the spring! Now that is the height of laziness!

What I was thinking of doing was getting my gran to give it to me (she is a retired nurse) - you think that would be mad?

Obviously it'd be better to get it from someone still doing flu jabs. However, i'd probably have the same thought going through my head if i were you Caroline. I guess you could discuss it with your Gran and have a think about it - not sure many others would recommend my advice.

Is this your first post Caroline? If so, then welcome!

Although, maybe it's your first post since the boards crashed, you've just re-registered and therefore it isn't your first post.

Anders,

You're so lucky.... down here in the Middle of England, we have to setup our own labs and produce our own Flu Vaccines from our own research and testing!! We have to them go through lots of testing phases and aquire the correct medical licenses to be able to sell ourselves these vaccines and then obviously administer them ourselves!!

Gosh...wish i was in your district!!

Dan, I enjoyed your little 'spiel' just then. (not in fact too far-fetched, actually!)

My GP surgery told me they were getting their next stock in until Dec 9th (year 2050 or something like that), but my careshare Consultant at Shrewsbury was very obliging, arranging for me to have a jab at out-patients, given my the 'jab-meister' - not sure who she was.

I'm going to start buying some flu-jabs to sell on ebay if it carries on like this
