How many of you are on three monthly IV's?
Now Tom's an adult, 17, we have been told he will no longer have three monthly IV's because they don't do things that way.
He is very concerned because he'd only just started this and he ended up having to go in and have them just one week after they were due.
was this just a coincidence?
He's better now than he's been for the past 9 months and as he's new at the adult clinic he doesn't want to ask what might be a stupid question.
So can you all give him your opinions please.

i think if you get ill every three months, like alot of people with pseudo, its a good idea to try and pre-empt it with three monthlies. then you reduce the risk of lung damage, or needing to go into hosp if you can have home ivs etc. i get ill every twelve weeks without fail, so i try and have ivs before that. as an adult he should really be able to request ivs when he feels he needs them - the doctor should listen to him, that should be the whole point of an adult cf clinic. it is hard standing up to docs sometimes though, im rubbish at it myself!

I don't think there are any stupid questions in clinic; you and Tom should feel able to ask about anything you are not sure about or concerned about.

If Tom feels that he benefits from three monthly IVs then I would raise that with his team. I think with any condition it is important to feel that you are doing all you can to keep well; if Tom believes this helps him then I think he has a case for continuing with this routine, even if it is not normally done that way in his new clinic.

Best wishes,

Before I transfered to adults I also was having IV's every three months but once I transfered this all changed, I asked the team if it was possible to continue with this but they said to me they didnt like doing it as we can become ammune to the drugs much quicker. sam x

My consultant's swear by iv's every 3/4 months even if i am feeling pretty well.
I think its stood me in good stead.
And there is no such thing as a daft question if you dont know the answer.
Grill the medical time all the time,,they will respect you in the end !!
Good luck.
