Hi there,
Thanks for your good wishes. It really has been a tough time for her. They only gave us a 40% chance of survival. Her blood pressure was as low as 40/20 and she was on IV adrenaline for about 6 days to stop her organs failing and also to try and raise her BP. They tested the fluid they removed and it contained no bacteria, but a high count of white cells, I dont know what this means. I do know that if you have a raised blood count, then you have an infection, but I dont know if white cells means the same.
They didnt think it was bile spilling out, and she had had absolutely no pain whatsoever.
She didnt come round as well as theyd hoped from the operation and they put her on a ventilator, it was horrible to see her like that. In the end it was clear that she wasnt going to come round herself, so they had to give her drugs to wake her, that was freaky, cos its literally instant. One minute she was lying there with tubes down her throat and this machine was breathing for her, and the next they gave her some drug in the IV and as soon as her eyes started to flicker, they pulled the tubes out and she sat bolt upright in the bed. It was like that scene in Pulp Fiction! Totally freaked me out, but I was just so glad to see her off that machine.
They say they may never know what caused the septecaemia, but I do worry that because they dont know where it came from that it could happen again. I just think its weird that she had no pain and all this fluid in her tummy.
I have to say that the doctors in ICU at University College were absolutely brilliant and I have no doubt that they saved her life.
She also had to be transfused as her HB was only 7.
So her little body has really been thru such a trauma. Im not surprised shes having these panic attacks, I just hope they stop soon.
The only good thing to come out of all of this, is that I think its cured her needle phobia, it was very bad. She had an arterial line in and a central line in her neck and she didnt even flinch. Mind you, I think the morphine helped.
ICU doctors dont really know much about CF though, one of them asked me yesterday how long shed had it! The nurse asked how many Creon she takes a day so I said 45, she said 4-5, I said no 45. I thought she was going to pass out!
It was so difficult for the doctors though as she also has Dilated Cardiomyopathy as well as CF, so they had to look at the whole picture, which must have been a real challenge for them.
Glad to say though shes on the mend, but shes lost loads of weight, which Im so worried about, she hates the food there. Cant wait to get her home to feed her up on all the stuff she likes.
Hugs, Trollydolly xxxx
