gallstones in cf

Hi,

My daughter is in UCH at the moment. The week before last she was admitted to A & E as she was ill. Turns out she had septecaemia. We almost lost her and the last week or so has been such a roller coaster.
During all the testing, they did an ultrasound of her abdomen and found out that she has gall stones and the lining of her gall bladder is thickened. They operated on her as they thought it could possibly be the appendix as well. During the op, they removed 800ml of fluid from her abdomen, but they are still unsure where it came from. They removed the apendix, they werent perforated but they also werent normal. Its very encouraging that her white blood count has gone back to normal, which indicates it may well have been the appendix.

Her kidneys also stopped working and she had to be put on dialysis for a couple of days.

She is on the mend now but is suffering from panic attacks now. She had some fluid on her lungs the other day so they gave her frusemide to get rid of it. The doctors say theyre not worried about it and think its just temporary due to the fact that they had to overload her body with fluid to keep her from going into shock.

Im just worried about this gall bladder thing, and I wondered if anyone else has any experience of this.

Perhaps Softie knows something about it?

Hugs,
xxxx

I am really sorry to hear what you have all been going through - I can't imagine how terrible it must have been going through this.

I don't have cf - BTW this is susan charlie's mom (changed username) but I did have gallstones last year and had my gallbladder removed - it is very painful to the point you can pass out - I never did but I know if they get stuck in your Bile duct its very dangerous and in your daughters case emergency. Could the fluid possibly have been Bile overspilling? I am no doctor but just guessing really.

Sorry your having such a tough time and I hope she gets better real soon

Take care

Love Susan

I don't know anything about gall stones - just wanted to say that I'm really sorry that your daughter has been having such a bad time lately. Hope she is improving all the time and that the panic attacks go away soon. Best wishes to you both xx

I'm so sorry to hear how appalling things have been recently - you must have been frantic!

A lot of pwcf get gallstones, and infortunately they are the type that can be hard to see on a routine scan or ultrasound, so a few of us get problems without them getting detected.

I looked up fluid in the abdomen and there are a number of listed causes, one of them being congestive heart failure. Given that your daughter has this and also developed pulmonary oedema I *guess* that this may just be a complication of the heart disease plus the septicaemia and all the other emergencies she has had.

Gallstones wasn't listed as a cause of abdominal fluid.

Feelings of panic or other forms of distress are common symptoms of heart problems. I remember having a very upsetting time when I was ill with DCM!

I truly hope your daughter is on the mend and recovers from this, and that you have the strength to cope with this frightening setback. ALl the best to the rest of the family. Take care. Try to remember to look after yourself.

Richard.

Hi there,

Thanks for your good wishes. It really has been a tough time for her. They only gave us a 40% chance of survival. Her blood pressure was as low as 40/20 and she was on IV adrenaline for about 6 days to stop her organs failing and also to try and raise her BP.
They tested the fluid they removed and it contained no bacteria, but a high count of white cells, I dont know what this means. I do know that if you have a raised blood count, then you have an infection, but I dont know if white cells means the same.

They didnt think it was bile spilling out, and she had had absolutely no pain whatsoever.

She didnt come round as well as theyd hoped from the operation and they put her on a ventilator, it was horrible to see her like that. In the end it was clear that she wasnt going to come round herself, so they had to give her drugs to wake her, that was freaky, cos its literally instant. One minute she was lying there with tubes down her throat and this machine was breathing for her, and the next they gave her some drug in the IV and as soon as her eyes started to flicker, they pulled the tubes out and she sat bolt upright in the bed. It was like that scene in Pulp Fiction! Totally freaked me out, but I was just so glad to see her off that machine.

They say they may never know what caused the septecaemia, but I do worry that because they dont know where it came from that it could happen again. I just think its weird that she had no pain and all this fluid in her tummy.

I have to say that the doctors in ICU at University College were absolutely brilliant and I have no doubt that they saved her life.

She also had to be transfused as her HB was only 7.

So her little body has really been thru such a trauma. Im not surprised shes having these panic attacks, I just hope they stop soon.

The only good thing to come out of all of this, is that I think its cured her needle phobia, it was very bad. She had an arterial line in and a central line in her neck and she didnt even flinch. Mind you, I think the morphine helped.

ICU doctors dont really know much about CF though, one of them asked me yesterday how long shed had it! The nurse asked how many Creon she takes a day so I said 45, she said 4-5, I said no 45. I thought she was going to pass out!

It was so difficult for the doctors though as she also has Dilated Cardiomyopathy as well as CF, so they had to look at the whole picture, which must have been a real challenge for them.

Glad to say though shes on the mend, but shes lost loads of weight, which Im so worried about, she hates the food there. Cant wait to get her home to feed her up on all the stuff she likes.

Hugs,

Hi Richard,

I was hoping you would reply.

Her heart rate in the acute stages was 166! It was literally jumping out of her body. But they said that was the heart working hard to fight the infection. Once the infection settled down, they did an echo, and her heart is fine, and they did the echo during the time when she had the Pulmonary Odema. Her heart function was good and her e/f was the same as what it was at her last appointment, so they werent worried about it. They said it was probably due to the fact they had to give her so much fluid and also cos her kidneys packed up too. They are working fine now, and the oher day when they gave her Frusemide, she actually peed 4 litres in 5 hours, and shes been fine ever since.

The doctors were in contact with the Brompton and also her heart doctor so I will mention the gall stones at her next appointment.

Hope you are keeping well Richard, loved the pics of wee Roland, hes edible, you must be so proud.

Love,
Trollydolly
