Hi, I think I have a kidney stone as I had one before and I've got the same symptoms, I was just wondering if this is common in pwcf or am I just unlucky
Also is there any way I can make it pass any quicker and what can I take for the pain

I believe we are more prone to kidney stones, for various reasons. We also get gall stones!

I find that holding something warm or hot on the side that hurts makes them pass quicker, and takes away a bit of the pain. I think that it relaxes the piping and lets the stone move quicker.

Hi Dawn - my son Jon had 2 bouts of kidney stones last year. On both occasions I took him to A&E where they did an x-ray but they just gave him some really strong pain killers and told him to drink gallons of water. He did that and the stones passed through. He was followed up by variuos urologists and nephrologists but no one could find any partcicular reason for it other than the fact that he has cf and therefore has a tendancy to develop kidney stones. I must say I've never seen him so ill but fortunately there didn't seem to be any lasting damage. The gist of this is to drink as much water as you can physically stand - the strong painkillers Jon had are, I think, on precription only.

Im currently having tests to find out the best course of treatment to get rid of my kidney stones. They are quite big (1 to 1 and a half inch for the biggest)so i very, very much doupt they are coming out on their own. They don't hurt too much, but i do get frequent twinges and my back is always aching. I'm not on painkillers but find a waterbottle helps. I heard somewhere that drinking plenty and walking around often helps shift them though i don't know how true this is.

Oh my that is very big, as I understand they are usually about 1-4mm, I had a test done at the doctors which showed a lot of blood in my urine. I am waiting for test results to checking for infection, but the symptoms are the same. I am drinking lots of water and put a hot water bottle on my side when i get the pain. If my results come back as negative, I am going to see if i can have an x-ray or scan as I did'nt get one last time as I seen a locum doctor who was very rude and arrogant!!

Just to add that when Jon had his first episode an x-ray showed a large stone but when he had the same problem a few months later the x-ray didn't show anything up but it was undoubtedly stones again. The gist of this is that even if an x-ray suggests there are no stones there might be small ones so a scan is much more useful.
