Hi, i am going into hosiptal around the 11th dec for a few days and to finish off treatment at home, which will mean iv's over christmas. I was wondering if any of you had this before and can or do you have a drink on them.

As I understand it, your not supposed drink on them. Most IV antibiotics put pressure on liver and kidneys and stuff, as they fill your body with toxins. Obviously adding alcoholic toxins to that isn't the best idea.

When my bro was on IV's last xmas he did have a couple of beers and a glass of bucks fizz on christmas day.

I personally try not to even sniff alcohol when on IV's as I already have mild liver cirrohsis, I don't want to put my liver under any more stress.

Good god, I'm afraid I hardly change my lifestyle when I'm on IVs. I like a glass or 2 of bubbly at the weekend, and I'm afraid I don't really stop if I'm on IVs, unless I'm driving, in which case I avoid my normal 1 unit as the antibiotics can occasionally make me extremely squiffy after one drink. Obviously, if I'm feeling rubbish I don;t actually feel like a drink but I'm sure I've been on IVs over xmas a few times and had a glass or two.
My liver so far seems A ok, so until my doctor tells me otherwise, I'm going to have a darn fine quality of life.

I've been advised not to drink on my IV course which will be going on over Christmas. Mind you, by the time the course actually finishes I'll have been on IVs for 8 months without a break. Not a real problem but I've got the most fabulous cases of red wine in the garage!!!

I don't think it's a big deal to have one or two sherries over christmas whilst on IV's. I wouldn't get hammered though although I expect some people do whilst on IV's.

Darling pet, why are you on IV's for eight whole months? What a bas**rd for you!

Hope thats not too personal for you to answer on the boards. I'd be interested to know how you're coping, being self employed and all. Runing my own business is something i'm seriously considering and being ill is a major concern for me.

My email is on my profile if you wouldn't mind giving me a shout.

You have mail

And for all you curious types..it's nothing exciting, just very long winded espcially when it comes to business so here's the short version...

Long term IVs for atypical mycobacterium. Was 6 months but had to change drugs after 2 and start again.

Business cunningly pays me whether I'm there or not as clients pay subscription fees monthly. A lot like royalties. Do the work once and then keep getting paid every time the product is used
