Transplant question ...

You know I have been on the tx list for a wee while now and a relative posed a query to me and he said;

"You are more likely to get a transplant around christmas time"

My feeling on this (and my Dad's) is that there is no particular pattern to this - can anyone enlighten us please with your views as to who is more likely to be correct?

I am sorry to ask this and feel a bit silly but it has upset me quite a bit and has me thinking and I really wish the subject hadn't come up. As he has raised hopes unnecessary.

Sweetpea (and Dad) xx

Hi Sweetpea,

We were told it was most likely to get a call over a weekend, not sure how accurate this is, but Chris got his call on a Saturday and a few other people I know got theirs Friday or Saturday. I imagine its more likely at Christmas because of the higher rate of road traffic accidents, due to bad weather conditions and maybe one too many.

Take care, hope your call comes soon.

My wife is a police officer, and it is due to seasonal drinking that transplant figures go up despite all the government warnings on TV about it.. drunk people think they are invinsable

Yeah, I think you're more likely a call on a weekend. That's what I think anyhoo. I got both my calls at the weekend, as did my three friends.

Don't know about christmas, but perhaps with the season that's in it, families might think about donating their loved one's organs...

They never really said anything about this to me. I only know that i had my call on a wednesday in summer (August 9th), very early in the morning, 4.45 am.

Claire got told that most transplants happen in the middle of the night.

She had her's at 12 noon.

So none of these "statistics" can be taken as 100% true.

I got my call late on a Tuesday afternoon, with my op going through the night to Wednesday morning.

I was only told that my call could come at any time, with the likelyhood that the surgery would be done into the night so Christmas didn't get a mention.

Stay strong sweetpea

Hey Sweetpea its funny you say that,

When i was in Garter's the other day i was talkin to someone about my being on the list and said how i only really think about it on the 10th of the month (i went on list April 10th 2006) anyway she said to hang on in there and be strong and then said somethin that took me back but made a lot of of sense, she said "Think about it, sounds terrible but there are likely to be more doners this time of year"

I'm guessin she just meant with endless colds and flu's and RTA'S (road traffic accidents) and stuff goin on round about this time, like you it did get my hopes up, (sorry for saying that) but it did and i think when anyone's been on the list as long as you have a wee boost now and again doesn't go a miss.

Really hope you get that call soon, take care.

I'm not sure how cold's and 'flu would increase the number of donors, because I'm fairly sure anyone who's going to pop 'em cos of 'flu isn't going to be viable for Tx anyway.

Contrary to popular belief, and my own logic on increase in RTAs etc, I was told by my team at Harefield when I joined the list that they actually perform more Tx's during the summer months than the winter.

To be honest, I don't think it makes a HUGE amount of difference to the statistics of likelihood what time of year it is.
