Because us cfers can eat what we want, and don’t have to watch what we eat with diabetes. Do any of you have trouble controlling your sugar levels? I’m currently on 20-30 units Novarapid and I’m still in the 20-Hi and I’m also taking 18 units Lantus before bed.

I would consider myself to have not great control. That sentance is phrased completely the wrong way around, but meh That's why I plan on asking my endochronologist (sp!) when I see him next year exaclty how I can achieve better control. Though you may have noticed my post about garlic, its worth a try. But certainly if you are taking that amount of insulin and still poor control you should see someone and ask them? :? Sorry I can't be of more help Burn, especially since you were so good to me a few weeks back!! x

Thanks for the reply I make my own soups and most of them need garlic, so I think I'm getting my fair share of garlic It's just when they are high, in fact of the scale as you know you feel horrible. I hate it, and it's now starting to get me a little down. I guess I'll have to plod along and most defiantly have a word with my diabetes team. Thanks for the reply.

Hi Burn,

Like you I have 18 units of lantus at night but have slightly more (humalog rather than nova) during the day - about 30 units sometimes more.

I've been on insulin for 25 years but over the last 3 or so have changed to having an injection every time I eat something which seems to control the sugars better and is much more flexible when the appetite is dodgy! End up taking quite a few units with a piece of cake or scandishake which are both quick acting high sugar. Still get times where the levels are a bit high for no apparent reason!! But then I just have a few units to get it back to normal.
Its a pain with bruising and lumpy injection sites though!!

Hope you get it sorted soon - high sugars are really tiring.

love R xx

Burn, have you heard of the DAFNE system? It's the standard diabetic care system used in the rest of Europe, and is now finally starting to catch on over here. It stands for Dosage Adjustment for Normal Eating, meaning the whole point of it is that it teaches you exactly how to adjust your insulin around the food you want (or, in the case of CF, have) to eat, so that you can go for the high-fat, high-calorie, high-carb options without suffering from high sugars.

Currently the waiting list is pretty long because not every hospital is equipped to teach it, but if you're finding it tough working your diabetes around your cf (or vice versa), you'd almost certainly get priority. Certainly you shouldn't be hitting the 20s, and long-term complications are only going to give you a harder time with your cf - I'd seriously recommend bringing it up with your team asap.
