Oh no - attack of the movie geek in me!
How can you possibly call Tim Burton's Batman "gritty"? Dark, yes, gothic, yes, but "gritty"?
Gritty is the kind of down-and-dirty, rough-around the edges, true-to-life kind of approach that you see in action movies like Paul Greengrass' The Bourne Identity/Supremacy, or maybe a Mike Leigh kitchen-sinker. Yes, the new Bond is a little gritty, certainly more gritty than any of the Bond's before it, but Batman is a spurious comparison.
Anyhoo, jumping off my horse of geekdom ( ) I saw it at the weekend and loved it. DC is awesome as Bond and I like how the filmmakers made him just a little bit rubbish at the things that he does, particularly early on.
It stuck remarkably closely to the book, which I was relieved about, with only the addition of the first 30 minutes of action really sticking out. I was annoyed at the poker scenes, though, with their stupid and overly dumbed-down commentary by the silly French policeman.
But considering how AWFUL the last 3 Bond's have been, this is an absolute triumph and has definitely got me back into the series. Bring on some more DC!
