Travel insurance for people with Cystic Fibrosis
The Cystic Fibrosis Trust does not recommend individual travel insurance providers, however we do provide details of a number of companies that will cover people who have pre-existing medical conditions, who you may wish to contact. Before doing so, you may wish to read the information on this page.
It is generally known that insurance cover for a person with an illness or disability is more expensive and difficult to obtain. Many insurance companies/brokers will not cover certain disabilities so please ensure that the company you are booking your holiday with i.e. tour operator or travel agent does not exclude people with 'pre-existing medical conditions'. Many package holidays include insurance cover, but you should check the clauses carefully to ensure that nothing prevents the policy applying to you and you can insist on arranging your own insurance if you are in any doubt. If your child is going on a school trip, check that the school's travel insurance covers them fully.
You must disclose all medical history or other factors which may affect the policy otherwise this may result in the policy being void.
It is strongly recommended that you consider insuring the whole party under the same policy as the person with Cystic Fibrosis. This would ensure that, if the holiday is cancelled because the person with CF cannot go, the cancellation costs of the rest of the party would be covered. Having one policy for all of the party would also make things easier if an emergency arose on holiday, as only one helpline etc would have to be contacted. (If you do decide to take out separate policies you should seek confirmation that the rest of the party are fully covered under their own policy if a claim was made as a result of the person with Cystic Fibrosis). You may also need to check that there is adequate cover for equipment or other property you will be taking with you. If the travel agent cannot fully answer your questions, contact the insurance company. Nearly all insurance companies will require you to disclose the following:
· Proposed destination.
· Commencement date of holiday.
· Duration of holiday.
· Nature of illness or medical condition.
· When the medical condition was diagnosed.
· What the prognosis might be, short term and long term.
· Have you had a stay in hospital in the last three to six months?· Treatment/therapy need.
· How much medication do you take?
· Is the person fit to travel to the destination? Proof of this will often require a letter from your Consultant or GP.
· Name and address of your Consultant or GP.
Some insurance companies do not cover the loss of medication. They do, however, have representatives based in countries abroad that can be contacted if your medication is lost or stolen. They will be able to locate the mediation needed but you will have to pay for it. You should carefully read the insurance policy, which will give full details with emergency telephone numbers. Other companies will include medication within their baggage policy. If you are in any doubt please ask the company you are dealing with.
It is very important for people with Cystic Fibrosis to have a comprehensive travel insurance policy before taking a trip abroad. Failure to purchase adequate insurance could result in you incurring massive costs should you require medical treatment while you are away.
